Training on immigration detention

On 8 December, 2020 ICMPD in the framework of the EU-funded ENIGMMA 2 project, in close cooperation with the Levan Alexidze Foundation organized a preparatory training for the participants of Levan Alexidze International Law Moot Court Competition 2020. The training was delivered by Jorrit Rijpma, professor at the Europa Institute of Leiden Law School.

The training was focused on immigration detention. Prof. Rijpma discussed the detention of migrants from the perspectives of International refugee law, International human rights law and European human rights law. During the training it was underlined that detention is only if it is used a means of last resort. The second half of the training was dedicated to the discussion of detention conditions and respective case-law of the ECHR-Judgments and Decisions. Prof. Rijpma underscored that conditions of detention should comply with minimum human rights standards.
